Two officers from the Brookhaven Police Department were shot in killed following an early morning shootout in Mississippi. Zack Moak and James White responded to reports of shots fired just after 5 a.m. and were met by 25-year-old Marquis Flowers.
Flowers opened fire on the responding officers fatally striking both men. They managed to return fire and wounded Flowers, who was taken into custody and rushed to the hospital.
Officials released very little information about the shooting and said they are continuing to investigate. They are interviewing potential witnesses and said that both officers were wearing body cameras.
"This is devastating for our community, especially given what has already happened so recently," Brookhaven Mayor Joe Cox said.
"Our community is strong, and we'll pull together as a family. Our sympathies go out to the families and we want them to know we'll be with them to support them as they cope with this tragedy."
