Redskins Quarterback Alex Smith Out For The Year After Breaking Leg

Washington Redskins quarterback Alex Smith (11) reacts to an injury in the third quarter during a game between the Washington Redskins and the Houston Texans at FedEX Field

Washington Redskins quarterback Alex Smith will miss the remainder of the season after breaking his leg following a sack late in the third quarter of a game against the Houston Texans. Smith was sacked by J.J. Watt and Kareem Jackson with just over seven minutes left in the quarter, and remained down on the field in serious pain.

Smith could not put any weight on his leg and had to be carted off the field, waving to the crowd as he was taken into the locker room.

The image of Smith being carted off the field with a broken fibula and tibia was eerily reminiscent of former Redskins quarterback Joe Theismann, who suffered the same injury on the same day 33 years ago in a game against the New York Giants. That injury ended his career.

He was also in attendance at the game and sent a text message to Smith offering his support.

"It was just an eerie moment," Theismann told ESPN. "It was surreal. You see him go down in a pile and then there's a shot that showed his leg bent and I turned away right after that. I feel so bad for him."

Smith underwent successful surgery and will begin the long road to recovery.

Colt McCoy took over behind center for the Redskins but could not lead the team to victory. The Redskins will not have much time to think about a new quarterback as they have a game against the Dallas Cowboys on Thanksgiving, in which the winner will be in first place in the NFC East.
