This date 2000: 'Get Kenyon the ball!"

My favorite Kenyon Martin moment: "Get Keyon the ball!"

Thursday, March 2, 2000

Cincinnati vs DePaul:

Allstate Arena....3:46 left in the game. The Blue Demons led the nation's No. 2-ranked team by 10 points. UC was without benched starter Pete Michael and had trailed by as many as 17. The timeout instructions by Bob Huggins: "Get Keyon the ball!"

What happened:

Kenyon scored four straight baskets for UC, scoring 10 of his career-high 33 points following that timeout. He also assisted on the basket by freshman DerMarr Johnson with 2.7 seconds left that gave UC a 64-62 victory. I'll never forget DePaul forward Quentin Richardson hitting a last-second shot from just inside half court, but it was ruled after the buzzer and waved off. Martin scored 21 of his 33 points in the second half. UC moved to 26-2 overall, 15-0 in the conference.

ROSEMONT, Ill. — The clock at the Allstate Arena read 3:46 as the Cincinnati Bearcats gathered around coach Bob Huggins. The scoreboard told the DePaul fans in the standing-room-only crowd exactly what they wanted to hear, that the Blue Demons led the nation's No. 2-ranked team by 10 points. Huggins' message during that timeout was simple: get the ball to Kenyon Martin.

Watch!

Dick Vitale was on the call for ESPN. Ken Griffey Jr was at the game. UC assistant Mick Cronin had hair. Listen to Vitale at the 2-minute mark and around the 7:26 of this video!

UC had five players who would be drafted from that team:

Kenyon Martin (1st overall pick in 2000)

DerMarr Johnson (6th pick in 2000)

Pete Mickeal (58th pick in 2000)

Kenny Satterfield (53rd in 2001)

Steve Logan (30th in 2002)
