Reds hang on to beat Pirates, take series

The Reds played long ball and coupled it with quality starting pitching to beat the Pirates 5-4 Thursday afternoon at GABP and take two of three in the series.

Eugenio Suarez broke a scoreless tie with a grand slam in the 3rd inning. It was his 3rd career grand slam. Jesee Winker clubbed his first home run of the season to make it 5-0 in the 4th inning. Winker collected two hits for the second consecutive game.

Luis Castillo: 6 IN, 4 H, 2 R, 2 BB, 5 K, 90 pitches/60 strikes. He took a 5-0 lead into the 6th inning before allowing a walk and then a 2-run homer by David Freese to cut the Reds lead to 5-2.

Brandon Dixon got the start at 1B with Joey Votto getting a day off. Dixon collected his first ML hit with a single in the 4th inning. He picked up two more hits on the afternoon.

Winker hit seven homers in 47 game and 137 plate appearances last season. His first HR this season came in his 45th game and 166th plate appearance.

Votto pinch-hit in the 6th and walked.

David Hernandez and Amir Garrett tag teamed to pitch the 7th inning.

Garrett pitched into the 9th, but allowed a 2-run homer to Austin Meadows to make it 5-4 and end Garrett's day: 1.2 IN, 2 H, 2 R, 0 BB, 4 K.

Jared Hughes, pitching for the third consecutive day, recorded the final two outs in the 9th for his second save. 

The Reds move to 6-19 vs the NL Central, 12-14 vs the rest of MLB.

14,853 were on hand at GABP.
