Reds: Yes. That happened.

Cards 12 Reds 11

The Reds led 7-0. The Cardinals scored 10 runs in the 6th inning and beat the Reds 12-11.

It was an embarrassing night of baseball at GABP.

The Reds have lost four in a row, 8 of 10 and have fallen a season worst 9 games under .500 and 9 games out of first place.

The Reds stand 43-52, the same record through 95 games of the 2018 team. Consider the 2018 Reds started 3-18 and 8-27.

Somehow, it seems only fitting that after all that happened Friday night the Reds lost another one run game (14-20).

To pile on further, the offensively challenged Reds collected 18 hits, scored 11 runs......and lost.

Trailing 12-9 in the bottom of the 9th, Jesse Winker singled in two runs. But Joey Votto came to the plate with runners on the corners and grounded out to end the game.

What a debut: Catcher Ryan Lavarnway went 3 for 4 with 2 HR, 6 RBI, 3 R, BB. The 31-year old had been hitting .213 in a Triple-A for the Yankees this season. Lavarnway's 3 hits, 2 HR and 6 RBI were all career-highs. He is the first player ever with more than 3 RBI in his Reds debut. His previous high of 4 RBI was set 9/14/12 with the Red Sox. He recorded his 1st MLB RBI since 9/18 of last season with the Pirates. His last prior plate appearance at the MLB level before Friday was 9/30 last season with the Pirates, a 7th inning pinch-hit single off Jared Hughes. Lavarnway’s last MLB HR prior to Friday was 8/23/15 with the Braves.

The Reds hit Adam Wainright with four runs in the 3rd inning and tacked on three runs in the 4th inning to lead 7-0.

Votto doubled in a run as part of that 3rd inning outburst. It's third time he's had an RBI in consecutive games: May 26-27-31, June 23-25, July 18-19. Votto has tweaked his stance again, going more upright the last two games.

Jose Peraza roped an RBI single to extend his hitting streak to seven games. Peraza has hit .340 since June 17.

Tyler Mahle: 5.1 IN, 7 H, 4 R. Mahle also collected two hits.

Matt Bowman: 0.1, 2 H, 2 R. Jared Hughes: 0.1, 2 H, 4 R. Robert Stephenson: 1.0, 1 H, 2 R.

Eugenio Suarez was tossed after a beef with the home plate umpire over balls and strikes in the first inning. David Bell followed with his franchise record 7th ejection of the season. Peraza took over at 3rd base for his first ML appearance there.

In the 6th inning, the Reds sported an Ivy League battery of pitcher Matt Bowman (Princeton) and Lavarnway (Yale).
