The Reds have claimed Toronto SS/2B, Freddy Galvis.

He is expected to report to the team tomorrow, when a corresponding roster move will be made.

2019: .267-.299-.444-.743, OPS+ 96, 18 HR, 54 RBI

Career: .248-.291-.383-.674, OPS+ 82

Galvis will turn 30 in November.

Stats and more HERE

2019: $4M (Reds will assume the prorated amount of around $1.1M).

2020: $5.5M team option, $1M buyout

Why did the Jays place Galvis on waivers? They are fully committed to top prospect Bo Bichette at shortstop. The move saves them about $2.1M.

Why did the Reds add him?

He can help this year, but it's also a move that looks to 2020. He's a switch-hitter that can play SS and 2B. He's also dabbled in the outfield and at 3B.

That fits into the Reds ongoing efforts to have flexible and versatile players on the roster.

He's a decent defender, not as good as Jose Iglesias, better than Jose Peraza. He has good pop that should play even better at GABP. He has a solid reputation in the clubhouse.

He's also durable having appeared in all 162 games in 2017-2018 and 158 games in 2016.

The Reds will have two months to toss him into the middle infield mix with Peraza, Derek Dietrich, Iglesias and Josh VanMeter.

They can evaluate him and see how and if he fits for 2020. He's security if Jose Iglesias can't be signed this offseason.

If the Reds pick up the 2020 option at $5.5M they have a starting shortstop at market value.

Again, no downside. The Reds take on at least $2.2M for a lottery ticket. Now they scratch it off and see what they get.
