This date 1999: Reds find a leader

February 2, 1999

The Reds acquired Greg Vaughn from the Padres:

Vaughn was traded by the Padres with Mark Sweeney to the Reds for Reggie Sanders, Damian Jackson and Josh Harris.

Vaughn had clubbed 50 homers, driven in 119 and hit .272-.363-.597-.960 in 1998.

He was an All-Star, won a Silver Slugger and finished 4th in NL MVP voting.

But 1999 was his free agent season and the Padres realized they could not re-sign Vaughn.

Vaughn was a member of the Reds for only the 1999 season, but what a season it was:

45 HR, 118 RBI, 15 SB, 85 BB, 104 R, .245-.347-.553-.881.

He finished 4th in NL MVP voting. He did not make the All-Star team, hitting .233-20-54 in the first half of the season.

How about this for a stretch run performance?

Greg Vaughn's last 30 games of 1999: 16 HR's, 37 RBI's, 32 runs.

Vaughn departed as a free agent on October 28, 1999 and would later sign with the Tampa Bay Devil Rays.

Career stats.
