The 6-foot-5 left-hander has won each of his first two career starts for the Cincinnati Reds while posting a 1.42 ERA and 0.71 WHIP. After pitching 6 shutout innings to beat the Cardinals at St. Louis on April 7, he carried a shutout into the 7th inning in Pittsburgh on Wednesday before winding up giving up 2 runs in 6.2 innings.
“When I went out there in St. Louis, I felt like I’d been out there before, just in a different sport,” Garrett said of his debut. “I wasn’t as jittery as I thought I would be. After I threw the first pitch, I took a couple of deep breaths and I thought, ‘This is just another game.’ I just pitched my game.
“After having that experience, I felt even more relaxed the second time. I’m not thinking about the surroundings or being in the big leagues. I’m just thinking about getting people out.”
Garrett’s success isn’t shocking....
