Reds 6 Phillies 3 (10)

Quick cap: The Reds battled back from 2-0 1st inning deficit to tie the game in the 6th. Tied 2-2, Alexis Diaz bounced back to deliver five huge outs in the 8th and 9th. Spencer Steer clobbered a 10th inning grand slam to provide the winner. Tejay Antone walked the 10th inning tightrope, but struck out Bryce Harper with runners on 2nd and 3rd with two outs. The Reds move to 2-1 on the season.

The winner: The Steer blast was 383-feet and out to left center field. The inning started with Bubba Thompson at 2nd. He stole 3rd. Will Benson walked and stole 2nd. Jonathan India walked on four pitches to load the bases w/ no outs.

Andrew Abbott battled: 5.1 IN, 2 H, 2 R, 2 BB, 4 K, 90 pitches/57 pitches. Alex Bohm made him pay in a 29 pitch 1st inning w/ 2-out 2-run opposite way cue shot down the RF line. Pitches by inning: 29-13-10-19-12-7. Retired 14 of the last 16 batters faced.

Big time: Alexis Diaz came on w/ 2 on 1 out in 8th at 2-2. He picked off the pinch-runner at 2nd and got a K of Realmuto on a wicked slider. He recorded a 1-2-3 9th. Needed just 14 pitches. He’d been warming w/ 2 outs and top of order lurking in the 7th.

3rd time TKO: Phillies LH Christopher Sanchez dodged a first inning bullet then kicked things into gear. He retired 11 in a row w/ 8 K into the 6th, flashing a dynamic changeup. But Reds chased him the third time through the order with a walk and double to begin the 6th. Both scored to tie the game 2-2.

Bats:
Steer: 2 H, 2 R, 2B, GS, 4 RBI
Jonathan India: 3B, BB
CES: 2 H, RBI
Fairchild: H, 6-pitch 2-out BB in 9th, SB
Benson: 0-3, 3 K, 10th inning BB

Bullpen:
Pagan: 0.2
Wilson: 1.0, Walked Bryson Stott as leadoff batter of 7th after starting inning w/ pitch clock violation. But he promptly picked him off.
Suter: 0.1; 2 H. Schwarber 1B, Turner 1B opened 8th
Diaz: 1.2, 2 K…14 pitches
Antone: 1.0, R....Bryce Harper came to the plate as the tying run with two outs.

Of note: Steer is the first Reds hitter with a go-ahead grand slam in extra innings since Todd Frazier on June 17, 2015 (walk-off against the Tigers).....

Per Matt Wilkes, Twitter...

Wait, what? India was out at the plate trying to tag/score on Steer fly to CF after a leadoff triple. India went in standing up on a high throw and appeared to get no help from the on-deck hitter, CES. Help or no help, not sure why the assumption wouldn’t be to slide.

Double nothing: Elly and Fairchild were stranded after a 2nd inning double steal with one out.

Glove love: Nice snag of liner by Abbott. CES diving stab of hot smash/throw to Pagan.

Needed more: Trailing 2-0 in the 6th, the Reds tied the game after the first four reached safely. But they failed to take the lead after 2 on, 2 in and 0 out. Santiago Espinal GO. Elly Go. Fairchild K when Bell let him face a RHP with 2 outs.

Picked: Reds pitchers picked off two baserunners.

Beep, beep: 5 stolen bases.

Breezy: Reds batters struck out 17 times.

How they scored
6th: CES RBI 1B, 2-1 Phils
6th: Candelario RBI 1B, 2-2
10th: Grand Slam Steer, 6-2
