121st edition of My Random Thoughts: Sports, TV, music, food, life.....
It's not a bad job when you come home from work and your wife says "How was your day?" and you can say...."I got to talk baseball with Marty on the show." Almost 50 years ago I was a kid knocking on his door to ask if he'd sign my Reds Greatest Hits record album.
APBA was the board/dice/card game of my high school years. I played just about every day with Gary Hamblin, Brad Berry and Brent Maurer.
I loved stopping at the Reds 580 Gift Shop (corner 6th & Walnut) on the way to a game when I was a kid.
Reacher is back for Season 3: Love Alan Ritchson. I thought no way the Beck character was Anthony Michael Hall. It is. But the Dominique Kohl storyline was rough. I reject it. I'm actually bothered by it.
My yearly Opening Day tradition is to get into GABP about three hours before first pitch and just sit in a seat, watch, and listen. The sounds of the sweepers on the concourse, finishing touches being put on GABP, plexiglass being cleaned, the smell of popcorn and hotdogs. Then the stirring of players as they come out onto the field, followed by the pop of mitts and crack of bats.
Fired up to start Kelsey Chevrolet Extra Innings each Monday through Thursday, after the game and until midnight!
I really enjoy being a guest on The Ride With JMV on 107.5 in Indianapolis. Seems like a really good dude.
My default position on Spencer Steer has become that he will eventually have shoulder surgery, and I'm really going to lose my mind.
Remember Peanut Jim Shelton selling peanuts on the street corner on Opening Day each year? Older gentleman. Top hat. One leg.
My dad once skipped school (Woodward) to attend Opening Day. He was in the bleachers with friends and an Enquirer photo took their picture. It wound up on the front page. The next day, his teach placed it on his desk. Ooops.
Still today, when I interview Marty, I feel like the 10-year old me.
I have a tradition of buying a new Reds cap each season. Then I move a hat down my tiers of Every Day Hat, Running Hat and Lawn Mowing Hat.
Ever use neatsfoot oil to break in a mitt? Rub it in the leather. Place a softball in the pocket. Tie it up. Place it under your mattress for a few days?
In 1992, I did a story on then Notre Dame baseball coach/current Brewers manager Pat Murphy. MLB Network is using clips of my story in their behind-the-scenes story on Murphy this week!
I used to love perusing boxscores in the paper.....and laying on the floor looking at all the player stats (BA-HR-RBI) in the Sunday edition.
I'm honored to have handled the radio play-by-play of four Indiana High School Basketball State Final Fours: Damon Bailey and Bedford North Lawrence beating Concord, Eric Montross and Lawrence North beating South Bend St. Joe, Glenn Robinson and Gary Roosevelt beating Alan Henderson and Brebeuf and Richmond beating Lafayette Jeff.
How the heck did Journey never have a No. 1 single on the Billboard Hot 100?
Dr. Tim Kremcheck retired as Reds Medical Director prior to the 2023 season. This is 2025. Please pass this along.
Growing up, an early season purchase of the Reds yearbook was a must.
Don't worry about things you don't care about
