Giants 6 Reds 3
Well, not exactly the cleanest of games by the home team….in the field, or on the bases.
Per Reds radio, the Reds have lost 32 consecutive series when losing the first game of the series.
An Elly De La Cruz throwing error opened the door to two unearned runs in the 8th inning, and a Jacob Hurtubise baserunning gaffe helped derail a comeback attempt.
Nick Martínez and Robbie Ray retired the first 25 batters of the game. They then allowed a combined four homers and seven runs over two innings.
Martinez: 6 IN, 4 H, 4 R, 1 BB, 5 K, 83 pitches/54 strikes. Disposed of the first 12 on 45 pitches before a Heliot Ramos solo homer with one out in the 5th. SF added three runs in the 6th for a 4-0 lead.
Down 4-0 in the 6th, Gavin Lux broke up Ray’s perfect game bid with a single to start the inning. Ray then appeared to come unglued after a pitch clock violation, allowing a two-run homer by Austin Wynns, followed by a solo bolt by Matt McLain. It was pretty annoying to hear him grunt after each pitch.
Manufactured insurance: The Giants added two runs in the 8th. The first run after an Elly throwing error, a sac bunt, steal of third, and sac fly. CES should have been able to scoop Elly’s one hop throw to start the inning. Jeimer Candelario missed the tag of the stealing runner at 3B.
Chance missed: Trailing 6-3 in the 8th, the Reds brought the tying run to the plate with 0 outs. McLain tapped out. Santiago Espinal bounced into a DP.
Baserunning: With runners on 2nd/3rd one out in 8th, trail runner Hurtubise ran into a tag-and-throw DP started by 3B Matt Chapman.
McLain: HR. Hit leadoff for first time in ML career.
Spencer Steer: as DH
Blake Dunn: Started in CF and singled.
Espinal: Started in RF, 0-3, BB
Hurtubise: PH BB in 8th.
Gusting/swirling winds in right field appeared to slap down homers for McLain, Lux and De La Cruz.
Bullpen:
7th: Gibaut 1-2-3
8th: Rogers 0.2, 2 R, 0 ER
8th: Barlow 0.1
9th: Suter
How they scored:
6th: Wynns 2-run HR, 4-2
6th: McLain HR, 4-3
Attendance: 14,039
Offense: 10 runs in three games at GABP….4-3-3.
