Giants 8 Reds 6 (10)
Mike Yastrzemski belted a game-winning two-run homer off Emilio Pagan in the bottom of the 10th.
Ouch. Big, big difference between pulling off a sweep and getting on a plane, and blowing a five run lead and getting on a plane.
The Reds (5-8) led 5-0 and then 6-1 into the 6th. But the Giants tied it up with a Wilmer Flores HR off Tony Santillan in the 8th.
Offense: 6 H, 4 BB, 16. No HR in series. They erupted for a five run 3rd inning off future Hall of Famer Just Verlander. They had scored a combined five runs in their three previous games.
Elly: 2 H, 2-R 2B…Leaping stab of liner ended 4th inning threat. Threw out runner at plate in infield grounder. His throwing error kept the 6th alive.
Lux: 2-R 1B, BB
Fraley: 2 BB, R. Nice sliding catch in 7th.
CES: 0 for 5, 2 K, 4 for last 38, 10 K, 1 EXBH. Hitting .174.
Marte: Took over at 3rd in 10th.
Espinal: saved the day w/ a beauty of a stop/throw with two on to end the 6th. No other 3B on this team makes that play. Nobody.
Will Benson: 4 K. Ball bounced past him along the LF line, batter didn’t advance.
The Reds D flashed with seven nice plays: Elly (2), Martinez, Espinal, Fraley, CES, Benson.
Martinez: 5.2 IN, 7 H, 4 R, 1 BB, 8 K, 93 pitches/ 65 strikes. ERA 6.06. Walked leadoff batter/scored in the 4th. Made a heck of a field/spin/throw to getrunner at the plate in 4th. Escaped first two on trouble in 5th. More trouble in 6th, three hits, WP, two runs.
Bullpen:
Rogers. Entered w/ 1 on, 2 outs in 6th. 0.0, R, 2 inherited runs.
Barlow 0.1.
Santillan: Entered tying run on 2nd, 1 out in 7th. Put out the fire. Then was victimized by a game-tying Wilmer Flores HR in the 8th.
Gibaut: 1.0 IN
Pagan: 2-R HR
Reds pitching saw their scoreless streak end at 21 innings in the 4th.
How they scored:
3rd Friedl RBI 2B, 1-0, Elly 2-R 1B, 3-0, Lux 2-run 1B, 5-0 Reds
6th Wynns RBI BB, 6-1 Reds
Verlander: 5.2 IN, 6 R. Things unraveled in a 35 pitch/five run 3rd in which six straight reached. K side in 2nd and had four K in first two innings.
