Reds: Late rally falls short, amid controversy

Mariners 5 Reds 3

The Reds suffered early breakdowns in the field and on the bases. A late offensive burst fell short. In between, Mariners catcher Cal Raleigh clubbed homers from each side of the plate.

The Reds fall back to .500 at 9-9. They face the rubber game of the series Thursday afternoon.

Signs of life: Down 5-0, they erupted for five hits and three runs vs the M’s bullpen in the 7th. CES doubled in two. Jose Trevino slapped an RBI single through the right side. But with runners on the corners and one out. Matt McLain bounced into a double play.

Controversy: Elly singled to lead off the 8th and attempted to steal. He was ruled out on batter’s interference on the strikeout swing by Austin Hays. A brutal double play. Tito mildly argued, to no avail. I think I would have been tossed.

Messy: Error, wild pitch, unearned run, runner out at plate, runner caught stealing/pick off 2nd…..all through the first four innings

Offense: 10 H, 2 BB, 12 K. 1st time in 9 games w/ DD hits. Miller: 5 IN, 3 H, 0 R, 8 K, 78 pitches.
Matt McLain: H, 1st since April 1.
Spencer Steer: 1-4, 2K. Snapped 0 for 19. Entered 3 for 30 on fastballs.
CES: 2-run 2B snapped 0 for 16……entered 4 for 45 overall.
Trevino: 2 H, RBI 2B. Up to .294.
TJ Friedl: 2 H

Martinez: 4.2 IN, 7 H, 4 R, 3 ER, 3 BB, 4 K, 83 pitches/55 strikes. ERA 6.00. That’s back-to-back starts of just 4.2 innings by Reds starters.
Facing the batting order
2024: 1st time .188/2nd time .291/3rd time .325
2025: 1st time .115/2nd time .250/3rd time .467

Defense: An Elly booted ball (4) on the first pitch of the game/Martinez wild pitch led to a run.

Cut down: Trevino out at the plate trying to score from 2nd on TJ Friedl’s two-out single in 3rd.

Picked off: After swiping 2nd (4), Elly was picked off/caught stealing (2) on an early break to steal 3rd w/ one out in the 4th. Austin Hayes singled as the next batter.

Bullpen:
Scott Barlow: 1.1, 12 pitches/12 strikes. Taylor Rogers: 1.0, H. Ian Gibaut: 0.2. H, BB, K.
Brent Suter: 1.1. Got final out of 2 on jam. 1st appearance since April 6.

How they scored:
7th CES 2-run 2B, 5-2 Mariners, Trevino RBI 1B, 5-3 Mariners
