Filing your taxes doesn't have to be expensive. The IRS offers several free options for taxpayers to file their federal income tax returns online. One popular option is the IRS Free File program, which allows individuals with an Adjusted Gross Income (AGI) of $84,000 or less to use guided tax preparation software at no cost. This program is a collaboration between the IRS and the Free File Alliance, a group of tax software companies that provide free electronic tax preparation and filing.
For those who prefer to do the work themselves, Free File Fillable Forms are available for any income level. These forms let you prepare and file your federal taxes online without any fees. However, they require a basic understanding of tax filing.
Another option is IRS Direct File, which is available in 25 participating states. This service allows you to prepare and file your federal taxes directly with the IRS. It's free, easy to use, and secure. If you have a Social Security number or an Individual Taxpayer Identification Number, you can sign in or create an account to verify your identity and access Direct File. This service is available until October 15, 2025, for those who need additional time to file.
For more information on these free tax filing options, visit the IRS website or your state's tax department website.
